Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons

Alaverdi Monastery, a Georgian Eastern Orthodox site, lies about 25 kilometers from Akhmeta in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia. Some parts of the complex date to the 6th century, but the main Cathedral of Saint George was constructed in the 11th century under Kvirike III of Kakheti, replacing an earlier church dedicated to the same saint. It ranks among the four Great Cathedrals of the Georgian Orthodox Church.

The monastery was founded by the Assyrian monk Joseph (also known as Yoseb or Amba Alaverdeli), who came from Antioch and settled in what was then a small village and former pagan center devoted to the Moon. At over 55 meters (180 feet) tall, Alaverdi Cathedral was Georgia’s tallest religious building until the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Tbilisi was consecrated in 2004, though it remains smaller in overall size than Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta. The monastery hosts the annual religious festival Alaverdoba. Located in the world’s oldest wine region, the monks produce their own wine, stored in a cellar dated to between the 10th and 12th centuries.

Burials at the monastery include Ketevan of Kakheti and Teimuraz I of Kakheti.

Reader's Guide

Alaverdi Monastery holds a significant place in Georgian religious and cultural history as one of the four Great Cathedrals of the Georgian Orthodox world. Its construction in the 11th century by Kvirike III of Kakheti marked a major architectural achievement, with the cathedral standing as the tallest religious building in Georgia for nearly a millennium. The monastery's origins trace back to the 6th century, founded by the Assyrian monk Joseph Alaverdeli on a site that was once a pagan center dedicated to the Moon. This layered history reflects the Christianization of Georgia and the enduring importance of monastic life. The monastery also plays a central role in the annual Alaverdoba celebration and is located in the world's oldest wine region, where monks have produced wine from a cellar dated between the 10th and 12th centuries. The burials of Ketevan of Kakheti and Teimuraz I of Kakheti further underscore its importance as a royal and spiritual site.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Alaverdi Monastery?

Alaverdi Monastery is a Georgian Eastern Orthodox religious complex situated in the Kakheti region of eastern Georgia, roughly 25 kilometers from the town of Akhmeta. While parts of the site date to the 6th century, the impressive main Cathedral of Saint George that visitors see today was raised in the 11th century under Kvirike III of Kakheti.

Who founded Alaverdi Monastery?

The monastery community was established by Joseph, an Assyrian monk from Antioch who is also referred to as Yoseb or Amba Alaverdeli. He settled in what was then a small village and former pagan settlement, creating the foundation on which the later cathedral complex grew.

Why is Alaverdi Monastery so important in Orthodox tradition?

It is recognized as one of the four Great Cathedrals of the Georgian Orthodox Church, placing it among the most venerated sites in the entire denomination. Its towering dome and cruciform plan also made it the tallest religious building in Georgia until 2004.

How tall is Alaverdi Monastery?

The Cathedral of Saint George rises to over 55 meters, roughly 180 feet, a height that kept it at the top of Georgian religious architecture for centuries. It held that record as the country's tallest church structure until 2004.

What happened to the original church on the site?

The earlier church dedicated to Saint George was replaced in the 11th century when Kvirike III of Kakheti commissioned the construction of the present cathedral. This rebuilding transformed the modest 6th-century monastery into one of the defining landmarks of Georgian Orthodox architecture.
