Dunsink Observatory

Dunsink Observatory is an astronomical observatory established in 1785 in the townland of Dunsink on the outskirts of Dublin, Ireland. It was founded by an endowment from Francis Andrews, Provost of Trinity College Dublin, and was placed under the management of the Royal Astronomer of Ireland. The observatory is historically significant as the workplace of William Rowan Hamilton, who discovered quaternions while walking from the observatory to the city, and as the source of Dublin Mean Time, the official time in Ireland from 1880.

The observatory was established by a £3,000 endowment in the will of Francis Andrews, who died on 18 June 1774. The site was placed on the south slope of a low hill in Dunsink, 84 meters above sea level. By statute in 1791, it was managed by the Royal Astronomer of Ireland, a position first held by Dr. Henry Ussher and later by Dr. Brinkley, Bishop of Cloyne. The South Telescope, a 12-inch Grubb instrument, was completed in 1868; its achromatic lens of 11.75 inches aperture was donated by Sir James South in 1862, having been purchased from Cauchoix of Paris 30 years earlier.
William Rowan Hamilton, director of the observatory, discovered quaternions—the first non-commutative algebra form—while walking from the observatory to the city with his wife. The annual Hamilton Walk commemorates this discovery, beginning at the observatory. Dublin Mean Time, the official time in Ireland from 1880, was the local mean time at Dunsink. In 1916, Ireland moved to Greenwich Mean Time. In 1936, Trinity College stopped maintaining the observatory and rented out the land. Éamon de Valera added a School of Cosmic Physics to the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in 1947, partly to revive the observatory, and his signature appears in the visitor book dated 13 January 1949.
